Testimonials for Banana Cabana - Eden Place

We loved staying at the Banana Cabana and St John! We went snorkeling quite a bit: At Watermelon Cay, Maho Bay, and a beach off the hiking trail at Ram’s Head we also went hiking on the Ram’s Head Trail; it was about a mile, but the view was BEAUTIFUL! The beach off of that trail isn’t far from the parking area and is the BEST for turtles because it was not crowded at all (we saw two just in the swimming area and we also saw a giant ray!!) We also saw turtles at Watermelon (which was the best for snorkeling). Maho also has good snorkeling and you can see turtle there too. Skinny Legs was great- it had great burgers and great music! Miss Lucy’s was not so great – when we were there, they only had one waitress and were out of most of the food on the menu, and very expensive. Aqua Bistro had REALLY good food and good live music. For breakfast, try Jake’s in Cruz Bay. The Tap Room (also in Cruz Bay) was awesome for lunch and dinner and has really good beer and burgers. Thank you!!!

The Lussiers , 04/2017

We had a wonderful week here. The longboard in Cruz Bay was the best dinner all week.Loved all the beaches! Brown Bay is worth a visit but be prepared for a hike there, bring flippers if you go to Waterlemon Caye and look out for the sea urchins. Make sure you try the puxxle as you get ready for dinner!!

The Corsons , 02/2017

Great house for two couples. We were very comfortable. Loved the pool access, had it to ourselves 90 % of the time. Loved the island, Coral Bay is so chill. Best meal at Aqua Bistro and Oasis. Doesn’t look like much, but the BEST chicken and I am not a fan of fried chicken! Love city market had everything we needed. Salt Pond Bay was heaven on earth. The reef bay trail gave us a run for our 40+ age. All in All- a very nice place to stay. A good value for your money.

The Boyds & The Coolens , Haverville, Ma and W.Newfield, ME , 02/2017

We enjoyed our time on the island.  When we were snorkeling, we saw rays, fish, beautiful coral and turtles.  Loved the sun all day.  At Maho Bay, we saw many turtles.  Lots of mosquitos and ants, so be prepared for all of that!  Overall, we enjoyed our stay at Banana Cabana.

Our favorites:  Early morning snorkeling at Waterlemon.  Saw rays, shark, barracuda, turtle and the most beautiful coral near the cay; Also loved Maho for the turtles and colorful fish; Burgers at Skinny Legs; Lunch at Pickles; Dinner at Shipwreck Landing; North Shore Deli at Mongoose Junction; High Tide restaurant for shrimp tacos; La Tapa for the BEST dinner.  Wish we had time to use the pool, prepared for mosquitos, not bought so many groceries, gotten better directions to the house and stayed a little longer before heading home.  We’ll be back!

We had a great time at Banana Cabana.  Didn’t have time to use the pool.  The donkeys and roosters were entertaining.  Skinny Legs was fun.  Loved St John!  Save Coral Bay!

Jim and Leslee , Woodbury, MN , 01/2017

Had an absolute blast! Snorkeling at Grootpan Bay was worth the drive!  Hawksnest and Waterlemon Cay were worth the walk/swim.  It was all very fascinating….each place has its own uniqueness!  Skinny Legs is great!  Shipwreck Landing is a must for seafood.  Sunday brunch at Miss Lucy’s with jazz is very relaxing.  The Bad Kitty four island tour to the BVI was wonderful…..Can’t say enough good things about the crew and that trip!

Dan and Joe , North Dakota , 01/2017

Had a great time in Coral Bay!

Bests:

Laura and Bo preforming anywhere. Serious talent, great singer.

Full day sail on “Mahiya” with Captain Karl. Beautiful, small catamaran perfect for a private charter. Karl was a very knowledgeable guide about the history and issues of St. John. He brought us to 2 rarely visited snorkel spots at Duck Island and Picnic cove. Little Lamshure bay very rough road to get there, but once you are there it is a gorgeous small sandy beach bay. Francis Bay, Big beautiful, sandy beach, absolutely stunning!

Pickles, Great for breakfast!

Hike to Brown Bay- Easy – the payoff is great- Isolated beach just for you or maybe one or two people!

anana Cabana is a great home. Perfectly situated on the Island when you want the quiet, real spot.

Vast space with private bedrooms and lots of doors and steps!...
Safe yet in contact with nature with the exterior showers and the balconies. Well equipped kitchen and meeting point.

St-John is lovely and the people are the heart of it all.

Connections at skinny legs is where everything starts.

Go find out!

Had a great week here at St John and Banana Cabana!  Highlights for us included a Bad Kitty excursion to BVI.  Saw The Baths and did some great snorkeling at the Aquarium!  Loved all the beaches!  Trunk Bay was great, but get there VERY early and leave by lunch.  Salt Pond was great, as was the up to Ram’s Head.  Waterlemon was great, as was Honeymoon and Caneel.  Special shout out to the Trail Bandit and his map/app.  It really helped us out!!  Banana Cabana has its flaws, but has a great kitchen and loved sitting outside on the cool evenings!  Thanks for a great stay!!

Windspree Guests , 04/2016

St John and Banana Cabana are the best escape from Washington, DC tension convention!  We enjoyed checking out from it all and a week of family adventure.  Some of our suggestions to pass along:  Snorkel tour with Sarah from Hidden Reef Eco Tours.  We went on the kayak/snorkel combination – she is listed on TripAdvisor as an “awesome guide”.  We didn’t know that prior to our tour, but would second it.  Very knowledgeable, ton of energy and great with our 11 year ol.  You can find her in the evening bartending at Indigo Grill.  Some food choices:  Indigo Grill for dinner – very fresh and great flavors; Pickles for sandwiches at the beach and hiking; Miss Lucy’s is OK, but not great…..probably not worth the price; Shipwreck Landing has good food; Aqua Bistro – hang at the bar for happy hour to get a local scene of those who have figured out how to drop out here – food is just OK; Skinny Legs for burgers and beers.  Groceries: bought what we needed along the way to avoid lots of unused groceries – Dolphin market had the best selection.  Beaches:  East end – beautiful without cruise ship crowd; good/fair snorkeling at Haulover; Nice beach at Vie’s that you pay to get to, but worth it; Trunk Bay – go after 4pm for free and cruise folks are leaving; Maho Bay – go after 3pm when it clears out (again of cruise ship and resort people); Salt Pond – nice hike beyond the beach on Ram’s Head – good for an iffy beach day.  Save Coral Bay – don’t change it.

John, Barbara, and Mikayla , 03/2016

Had a great time.  Loved this side of the island.  Snorkeling at Maho and Francis were best.  Did an afternoon cruise with Jimmy and Britta at Kiote Sails….well worth it.  Now back to snow and ice in Boston.

The Lussier Family , Boston, MA , 12/2015

I slept like a log on our first here. My son lives on this island and I was visiting. He stayed with me and we both were amazed at the scenery that the Cabana has. I liked taking outdoor showers, the breeze was amazing. We ate at shipwreck landing, excellent food. We will be going to Maho and some other secluded beaches. This house is like a tree house. Very comfortable. When you go to mongoose junction, eat at Virgin Fire. Thank you for sharing this house with us!

Thank you for the hospitality and cool place to return after hitting the beaches. Family favorite was Maho but enjoyed the many others. Wish we could have stayed longer.

The Millers, Woesks, & Wallers , Ohio and Illinois , 06/2015

We appreciate your opening your home to our family. We loved coupling “become” after a day of snorkelling bulking sale boating or just enjoying a local restaurants family meals. Using the outdoor showers were fun after loun leian weiter flow wonderful it was to stand under marry hey!

Going sailing was especially fun! We travelled on the Cimmeron and stopped to snorkel twice, seeing turtle, sea cucumbers, schools of fish and amazing coral! Also, going back to the condo was nice, seeing the little geckos was cool. Awesome stay at the Virgin Island. I don’t want to go back!

Andre Tost , Cleveland, OH , 05/2015

Thank you, Browns and Windspree for an awesome stay at Banana Cabana! Really was great coming back to a place each day that we could call home. Kitchen is well equipped, bedrooms comfortable and balance balconies relaxing. Waterlemon, Maho, Trunk, and East End Pelican Rock were highlight snorkelling also 2 snorkels with captain Rick on Cimmeron. Only downside was the mosquitos that came out after last weeks rain. Thanks again!

Good Morning!

What a wonderful place! Coral Bay was chill and relaxing. Skinny legs was very fun, great drinks and friendly service. Both Francis Bay and Maho Bay with Sea Turtles at Maho was amazing! Also the Leinster bay trial to Waterlemon beach and snorkelling around Waterlemon Cay are a must see! If you go into Cruz Bay high tide and the beach bar are both great!

All in all St. John and the Banana Cabana were perfect!

Brooke Woodard , Maine , 05/2015

Gday! We all had a wonderful time here over our short trip (but I will speak for myself and let them do the same). This little house on a hill is as beautiful as the island itself and our sleepy and stress free stay was exactly what I wanted and was more than I was expecting. Snorkelling through the island was amazing and every person we met (both tourist and local) were extremely pleasant and nice! Thanks for sharing your place with me.

Nate Day , 05/2015

We had a great time staying here! Best snorkelling:  Waterlemon, Haulover, Salt Pond, Maho Bay (Especially the sea Turtles!). The best restaurants would be Miss Lucys (great brunch on Sunday get there early!) Oasis (good deals), Vies Snack Shack ( great Johnny Cake), Shipwreck landing ( casual) rams head trail from salt pond bay was very nice and great views. We loved all the animals that the island had to offer. Best underrated beach is Francis bay. The place is great sun, views, snorkelling, beaches and food. Would come back in a heartbeat. Would come back in a heartbeat. Best BVI stop “ Gertrudes on Jost Van Dyke ( Soggy Dollar is overrated).

The Truedales & The Grimms , Park Rapids, MN and Eureka, CA , 04/2015

I was a “Plus 1” on this trip w. The Klebenows! I am from Portland, ME and this was the perfect escape from the everyday life! Its quiet on this side of the island but with plenty to do. Skinny Legs is recommended! (Waterlemon is “not” the best snorkelling, I’d go Maho or St. Francis for that!) Enjoy!

Plus 1 , Portland, ME , 01/2015

We had a fabulous stay! Love the showers and the views! Best meal was at the tourist trap. Best beach for snorkeling was maho and francis bay. Best sail/snorkel charter was the survivan (do it it was fun). The best hike was reef bay trial with the guide or even without. There is so much to see there.  We also loved Sunday brunch at miss Lucys. Get there at least 30 min early for a table. Try the stuffed french toast! Best breakfast I have ever had <3.

The Klebenows , Edwardsville, IL , 01/2015

We are visiting from Middletown, DE. This is our fourth time here as a family and the island and this home did not disappoint. It was a bit more crowded on the island, but celebrating New Years at Skinny Legs was a lot of fun! Had dinner at Fatty Crab which came highly recommended, but it just wasn’t for us. Great tasting food (upscale sushi + stuff) but left hungry. Would take shipwreck or skinny’s any day over that. Highly recommend the hike at Salt Pond. Vies is a great bech for fewer people. Most beutful water is Hawksnest. The others don’t disappoint either… Lamashur (sp?), Gibney, Honeymoon, and Maho. We just love this island and loved this place!

The Myer's Family , Middletown, DE , 01/2015

This side of the island, the quieter calmer side of the island, is a place were you stop for iguanas crossing the road, where you wave to Liz your kayak guide, day after day, as she pulls her trailer toward hurricane hole. You watch the sun rise and crest the hills and fall as if you are simultaneously east and west of everything but the wind in the trees and the chirps and crows and coos of the birds resting in and around them. Here, you chase the rain and are rewarded by the most arched and brilliant of rainbows- as if it were reinventing the very possibility of rainbows.

One bite of a conch fritter at Vies will explain the whole island. Yes, keep heading west on 10 and you’ll find it. @2.50 per person you also can use their secluded beach.

On Island the sand flies (no see-ums), mosquitos are flesh eating monsters. You adapt. Use the nets, plus deet.

The stars- they might just be showing off. Let them.

Trunk bay pulls tourists in with its white sand tentacles, so arrive and leave early. Our stay and witness human kind at it most fascinating, if not worst, depending on your disposition.

Yes to Francis bay for soft sand entries into gentle crystal waters. And for peace.  Yes to Lamesure Bay for under water fields that call in the ocean fauna. Just beware of the urchins when you get in and out.

Arawaks expeditions- you can find them in mongoose junction, Cruz bay, and online where you can make reservations- has an excellent day long kayak and snorkel excursions for about $120 pp.

Whatever you do, take it all in, be present, notice, and make the very most of it. Enjoy!

Gabriella & Kal , Falls Church, VA , 12/2014

Thank you for sharing your house with us. We met some great people and animals. Loved the donkeys, goats, the salamanders and the iguanas. The beaches were beautiful.

What an amazing way to end the summer. The weather was delightful, banana cabana offered a most comfortable home while we were here. On the last night the rain caught us off guard as we scrambled to get the top on our jeep! (4 am wake up call!)

Coral bay was the perfect vibe for the Mc Caslins and we made friend with the entire staff at Pickles which was our go to spot for breakfast and lunch.

Our favorite beach? Hard to say. Lane loved Francis for the sea turtles, Finn and I loved Oppenheimer and Mark agreed w/Lane and loved Francis. The drives around the island provided their own excitement with views overlooking the bays and the shaded groves keeping us cool.

We are already planning our next trip and are finding the summer to be quiet and charming. The snorkelling was some the best for color and variety. We were never at a loss for our next adventure and even manager a little history at Annaberg.

Mark, Alicia, Lane & Finn , Alexandria, VA , 09/2014

Sadly we’re nearly come to the end of our relaxing ideal week on St. John. This was our first time coming to the USVI, and we will be back! Your home was a great match for our family the perfect mix of island life and modern conveniences. Coral Bay is definitely the right side of the island to take in St. John! Full, unspoiled beauty and calm.

We are here with our 3 children ages, 10, 6, and 3, so our excursions here are on the tamer side. Our favorite family friendly beaches were Maho, Francis, Honeymoon/ Caneel and Hawksnest. The snorkelling was varied but great at all of these locations. We stuck to short hikes such as Annaberg ruins, cinnamon bay nature trail, turtle point,. We did a day sail with Kiote Sail. A great way to see other islands and out the way snorkel spots. One tip for visitors would be to reserve the National park service “Reef Bay Trail” hike in advance. We are here in the “Down Season” and it was 100% booked.

Too Much beauty for one visit. See you again SOON!

Our group is from Rochester and Locke NY ate at shipwreck landing our last night. Very good food but small parking area. Easiest to find going into Coral Bay. We missed it and went a few miles too far and turned around.

Rochester & Locke, NY , 06/2014

Having a great time. Shopped in Cruz bay for groceries before coming to the banana cabana. Store is called and starfish market, it’s on the free maps, and is a lot! Cheaper than any other grocery store.

The maps and the tour book says brown bay trail is a “short easy walk” It’s not short and its uphill for a quite a distance then down the hill about the same. We didn’t snorkel or swim when we got there.  Too much seaweed plus looked dirty .  Francis Bay on the other hand is wonderful. Haulover bay , little Lameshur, salt bond bay, Leinster bay and trunk bay were also done. Skinny legs is fairly inexpensive with good food. Day Sail with the good food. Day sail with Kekoa was very nice. Stopped at Lovengo Bay, Two Butt Beachm, Honey moon Bay and Hawksnest. Good snorkelling but Francis Bay was one of the best. The next best was Trunk Bay with the underwater trail.

Francis bay is leaving with sand fleas at dusk but not seen at all during the day. They sure are hungry at night! Be careful on the roads! Several people don’t seem to know you shoudnt cross the yellow line! Especially on the curves.

Had a wonderful time over all!

Had an absolute blast here at Banana Cabana and St John.  Did Salt Pond bay , Drunk bay, Maho Bay, Cinamon Bay, and finally Trunk bay. The reef bay hike was amazing but difficult. The petroglyphs were awesome and the waterfall a fresh stop on a long hike. The beach though pretty it was very rocky and beware of the stinging anemonies! The sugar plantation was beautiful and the locals that gace us sugar cane and a fresh coconut which were so sweet and loving. Do the horse tour with the Carolina Corral. Dana was great and well worth the money.

Thank you for your hospitality and lovely stay. We loved our adventures on this side of the island, the hiking, the beaches and fun nightlife were well worth the visit. I'd recommend this beautiful home to anyone in the amazing island of St.John.

We enjoyed staying on the quieter side of the island. Coral Bay has lots of character and a laid back feel. The house felt super comfortable to come home to after a day of snorkeling, hiking, or sight seeing, and is outfitted with everything we needed. The reef bay trail was a good workout and the Annaberg Ruins were very interesting.

Thank you for sharing your house with us. Check out Miss Lucy's along route 107 for some nice, local food right on the beach.

What a wonderful stay our family has had. We hit most of the beaches but having young children we found Maho with its shallow waters and short beaches to be the best for us. We took the day trip to the Baths-WOW! My husband rented a boat and took us on a day trip to the Willy T, Foxy’s and the Indians for snorkeling-incredible! The house was great, it had everything we needed plus some things we didn’t. On our last night I called my husband downstairs because there was a scorpion in front of the dryer! My husband lived here for several months and I’ve been here before and neither of us knew there were scorpions here! Yikes! But still pretty cool to actually see one out in nature. Thanks for the great stay

We loved the Banana Cabana. Our favorite restaurants were Rhumb Lines and Skinny Legs.  Out favorite beaches were Waterlemon and Brown Bay (although quite a hike it was worth it) The mosquitos were bad. The pool was wonderful, we didn’t mind it being shared.  We pretty much had to ourselves anytime we used it.  The neighbours were very friendly.  We had such a relaxing vacation!
OH , 04/2009
Favorite beach: Cinnamon Bay Favorite hike: Reef Bay Trail Favorite snorkeling: Waterlemon and Cinnamon Favorite restaurant: Aqua Bistro Favorite activity: Reggae night at Sputniks with Inner Vision Loved outdoor showers and well equipped kitchen!

We loved “Banana Cabana” and the views looking out either side of Fortsberg and to the water. The weather was great, only real rain was the night we arrived. The house is well equipped but we did end up eating at several Coral Bay restaurants. We liked being able to walk to Skinny’s and Donkey Diner. Favorite snorkeling was at Salt Pond Bay, Little Lameshur, and Leinster Bay. Cinnamon Beach was beautiful and we even got in a little body surfing. I’m at avid birder and enjoyed the native species right from the decks. Our stay was a great relaxing break from our usual work lives and cold New England. Thanks,
Peter, Ruth and Emily , 01/2009
Let’s set the record straight-there will be no more whining at the Banana Cabana-look around people, you’re in Paradise! The guy with the mosquitos had a right to whine, but the rest of you – get over it! We loved the chips at Skinny Legs…great week that flew by, can’t wait to come back. The house was perfect, the neighbours were wonderful and every turn was more breathtaking than the last. Thanks again!

Three previous trips to St. John coming daily on the car ferry-Coral Bay won our souls.  This time we sleep on the island!  Letting our stress drain out onto the sand…Nights at Aqua Bistro, burgers at Island Blues, Skinny Legs always a funky hangout.  First night at Shipwreck-good everything!  Disappointed in Bordeaux Mt and Paradiso-overrated and expensive. Close call on a corner with a bull-otherwise we were charmed by meeting the critters-chameleons, humming birds, chickens, goats, donkeys, lizards, crabs and mongoose.  The early evening vertical drama at East End is a must for newcomers and perhaps a sail to Jost Van Dyke.  We loved the hillside and harbour views which greeted us each morning on the many decks of Banana Cabana. Showers were great! Lily’s Gourmet Market seems to carry everything so that Cruz Bay seems unnecessary.  Thank you for sharing your tree house with us, we’ll be back!

Lee, Allegra, Dorchester, Chelsea , 05/2007
We came to St. John for my niece’s wedding-found this house via Windspree Vacation Homes. Since the group included me, my husband and my 80yro mother, we were a little surprised to find outdoor (and upstairs!) bathroom facilities, and a bit of hike to get to the pool. Critters were a problem in the bathrooms; there was a spider and some mosquitos. We grew to find the charm in this home though. Thanks for the new coffee pot! Got used to the roosters and the donkeys and it’s exciting to get here. Oh, a dustbuster would be nice to clean the car. Thanks again,

Another fun vacation on St. John. Experienced seeing our first shark while snorkeling! He was roaming the beaches in Lameshur and Little Lameshur Bay which was very disappointing as we always enjoy it there but were scared off this time. But great snorkeling there. Thank you,

The four of us have been to St John 5-9-01 times. Two have stayed in Coral Bay 3 times before-we all loved our stay here.  We loved feeding the sugar birds each day and enjoyed the very well equipped kitchen for a few fish grilled dinners.  Thanks for the use of your home! A few suggestions: napkins, paper towels, laundry soap for one load… When we rented here in 1994 we arrived to a bottle of wine on our table! What a nice surprise!

We arrived after tropical storm Chris and were greeted by hordes  of mosquitos.  They were so thick and voracious that we couldn’t use the deck or the pool.  In some places like Cruz Bay and Hawksnest they weren’t bad, while others-Skinny Legs, Trunk Bay, Annaberg-- they were unendurable.  The netting in the upstairs bedroom helped some; the downstairs bedroom could use a net too.  Well, it is the tropics-but in 25 yrs of coming to the islands we’ve never seen anything like it! The house, incidentally, was hot. Maybe put ac in the bedrooms? I agree with the earlier guest who said the loft was not a good sleeping option. It’s about 10* hotter than the rest of the house. Enjoyed some great scuba diving with Low Key divers out of Cruz Bay. Crew members were all friendly and helpful. Snorkeling was good at both Hawksnest and Trunk Bay but we especially recommend snorkeling around the little cay at Cinnamon Bay. Haven’t yet found a memorable restaurant. People here have raved about Skinny’s but the mosquitos are fierce there right now. The burgers were good there, but they came with potato chips instead of fries. However we enjoyed our trip and hope to be back

What a great stay here on St. John.  After getting used to Centerline Rd. and the driveway, we enjoyed staying on the quieter side of St. John.  Some Must-Do’s: Day trip to the Baths and the Caves at Norman Island.  Rent a dinghy and go around the island to all the beaches that way.  Sunset sail.  Eat at Shipwreck Landing, Rhumb Lines and Café Roma. Thanks again!

Great visit.  Lovely home.  Favorite restaurant: Lime Inn. Favorite beach: Cinnamon Bay-bring bug spray to all the beaches! Loved Island Blues. Great family vacation! Thanks!

Our first time on St. John was a memorable one indeed.  After getting used to the driving and the roads, we settled into a relaxing and fun filled vacation.  The people on the island could not be any friendlier!  We especially liked the snorkeling at Cinnamon Bay, and we saw some amazing turtles at Waterlemon Cay.  We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and thank the owners and the people at Windspree for providing us with everything we needed!

What a marvelous place you have here! It is very well equipped-don’t think we missed having anything we needed. Your neighbors are all very pleasant which also makes for a pleasant stay. The stars are incredible and the full moon provided us with all the “night light” we needed. We feel totally relaxed and rejuvenated-and that was the purpose of our stay. Many thanks!

Without a doubt, the quietest place we’ve stayed in over the years.  If you listen carefully, it’s possible to hear the surf.  All the doors took some getting used to.  An interesting architectural concept.  I’m not sure I’d want to have anyone sleeping in the loft.  The downstairs bed room was brighter and airier than most other units so that was a plus.  It would have been better for me if the gate and drive had been a foot wider.  I was uncomfortable moving the jeep in and out with the result that I used space across the road. All in all a good visit- looking forward to next year.
