Visitors to St. John will see Alexandra palm trees around the island. While not native to St. John, the distinct looking palm trees are popular because of their beauty, speedy growth, and sturdy leaves
The Alexandra palm lives in acidic and neutral soil and grows best in dirt, clay, loam and sand. Alexandra palms can grow up to 30 yards high, with leaves 2-3 yards long that reside near the top crown of the tree. Alexandra palms produce lavender colored flowers that mature into distinct small round fruits that turn dark red before dropping.
The Alexandra palm (AKA King palm) reproduces only by the dispersal of seeds, which can be spread by birds and bats. Alexandra palm seeds float, leading them to shorelines around the globe.
