St. John and the surrounding islands lie in the belt of what’s called the Easterlies, or Trade Winds.

Visitors to the US Virgin Islands from December through February may sense something stirring with the wind and sea. It’s a phenomenon called the Christmas Winds and it’s when the trade winds blow the strongest.

It is normal in the winter months for the trade winds to blow between 20 and 30 knots consistently. Around this time of year the jet stream dips further to the south, bringing the strongest winds to St. John.

September to October delivers the weakest trade winds and results in unsettled weather.
