Renting a car on St. Thomas?
There are 3 car barge services that run between St. Thomas and St. John. The last car barge from St. Thomas to St. John leaves Red Hook at 7pm on most days. On weekdays there’s a barge every half hour from 6am to 7pm (assuming all barges are operational). The barge schedule is not as consistent on weekends and holidays, so be aware and plan ahead. Tickets can be purchased in advance, but this does limit your options as to which barge you take, as the 3 companies do not exchange tickets. It is easy enough to purchase your ticket when you arrive on the barge.
St John Car and Jeep Rentals
- Jeep Wrangler or Suzuki SX4
A 2 door hardtop for 4-5 passengers, with automatic transmission and 2.5 liter engine with 120 h.p. The auto is comfortable to drive and it’s also a lot of fun on St. John’s twisting roads. - Grand Vitara, Jeep Liberty, Dodge Nitro
A 4 door, 5 passenger wagon, with automatic transmission and 2.5 liter engine with 120 h.p. This is the very popular wagon that can be spotted in any suburb in the US. The auto delivers a lot more comfort than a 2 door, and is our favorite vehicle for banging around St John. - Suzuki XL, Ford Explorer
A 5 door, 5-7 passenger wagon, with automatic transmission and 3.2 liter engine with 190 h.p. The SUV is another popular sport utility vehicle with a suspension system that is ideal for island roads, and it has much more room and comfort than a Sidekick. - Isuzu Truck (Safari Truck)
This is an 8 passenger, 2 door pickup truck with bench seats on both sides of the truck bed which is covered by a canvass top. A truck offers less comfort and safety than a Trooper or a Liberty, and the trucks are four wheel drive. However this is still a scenic and fun way to get around the islands with larger groups.
