Sunday, May 12th is Mother’s Day this year, so here’s to all the great maternal figures out there – we couldn’t have done it without you!

The celebration of mothers dates back to ancient Greeks and Romans, when festivals were held in honor of the mother goddesses, Rhea and Cybele. Today, Mother’s Day is celebrated across the world. Thailand marks the occasion in August for the birthday of the current queen. In Ethiopia, families gather every fall for several days to sing songs and feast together to honor motherhood, and the UK has Mothering Sunday

The modern-day Mother’s Day in the US is attributed to Julia Ward Howe and Anna Jarvis, started the tradition in church in 1907. A Mother’s Day International Association was founded in 1912 and heavy commercialization of the holiday soon followed. Did you know, Anna Jarvis (one of the original founders) filed a lawsuit in response, but was unsuccessful in stopping  one of many marketing avalanches called Mother’s Day.

Love you, mom!
